Sikkim receives Oscar from UN, becomes world’s first 100% organic state

It is a moment of pride for Sikkim for becoming world’s first 100% organic state beating 51 other nominations across the Globe. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Future Policy Gold Award was duly received by the chief minister of Sikkim, Pawan Kumar Chamling.

In the ceremonial speech, CM Pawan said “An organic world is definitely achievable. I also appeal to the world community that we do not carry out any kind of development work and business at the cost of the environment”.

The award was handed over by FAO’s Deputy Director Maria Helena Semedo, who praised Sikkim for setting a precedence. She further added, “Sikkim is an outstanding example on how to successfully transform the food system and ensure respect for people and planet.” Sikkim’s organic farming has had a greater impact than just organic production. It has benefited over 66,000 family farmers apart from positively affecting socio-economic aspects, boosting rural development, expanding the market and building sustainable tourism.

Sikkim beat 51 other nominations which included Brazil, Quito in Ecuador and Denmark. All three of them shared a silver award presented by environmental activist and president of the Navdanya International, Vandana Shiv.

A special screening was held post the ceremony to highlight sea changes in the state of  Sikkim through research, marketing and education of farmers. “Challenged by opposition parties and chemical sector, we embarked on this journey in 2003’’ CM  Pawan said earlier in a press conference on Monday. This award is a result of our sheer hard work and a strong political commitment.

Co-organised by the FAO and the World Future Council (WFC) and IFOAM – Organics International, the award nicknamed “Oscar for best policies”, recognizes the world’s best policies and laws promoting agroecology.
